a.p.c. style for people who aren't rich

I really regret buying moccasins from A.P.C. It's not that I don't like them. I love them--they're beautiful. It's just that I hate them too. Every time I look at them I feel guilty for buying overpriced shoes. They're not worth the money I spent, and hopefully I've learned my lesson. I've only worn them outside once because I'm afraid to get them dirty! It's hard to enjoy shoes when you know you can't afford them. So I did some research and found some more affordable alternatives to A.P.C.'s super cute shoes, hoping that others will avoid my fate. The images on the left are the original A.P.C. shoes, and on the right are the cheaper versions. I wish I would have gotten these Minnetonka moccasins ($48) instead of the ones I got ($250). They're not as nice, but hey, you can wear them outside and get them dirty!

If you're not into moccasins, these basic but quirky black flats are cool too. The ones on the right are from Target ($13.99). You can't really tell from the photo, but I saw them in person today, and they're extremely similar to the A.P.C. ones ($405).

I love tan sandals for summer, and these are very simple chic. The cheaper version ($116) is from Cork-Ease, and they look way more comfortable and practical than the sky high A.P.C. ones ($465).

I'm so glad you like the "Deann" shoes... I bought a pair not only because I thought they were cute, but because it's not often I find a pair of shoes named after me! :)

Thanks Jenny!

Hi Jenny -- I've purchased 4 things from APC in 3 years (2 on sale and 2 not) and I agonized over the price each time, before and after. And then I wore them all the time. All the time. I feel sorta lovely when I put them on and I hope your moccasins (two c's one s, phew) make you feel lovely too.

I have a pair of those Minnetonkas and they are seriously the best. So comfortable and they've held up pretty well through all the walking I do in them. The APC ones are so much nicer, but those pesky student loan payments get in the way of pretty things. Doggone it.

Nice job on the research. I'm usually a target shopper. Mostly because I can't even think to afford A.P.C. and the like. I wear my shoes hard and want something new every season. Target has yet to let me down.

so sweet of you to do this research for us all. i'm the same way with my expensive things...so afraid to ruin them that they become no fun. I should relax and just enjoy them.

you are really a super terrific shopper. this post is the best look-alike fashion thing that i have seen in a really long time. you are spot on with the lower priced versions in that the style truly is comparable. there are differences, but they are slight, and the way that they are different is also somehow ok.

erica, i do really like apc and i feel great in the moccasins, but my budget is really hurting. not everyone can afford apc stuff! i hope that some day i can, and then i'll truly be able to enjoy it and think of it as an investment. but i think it's actually kind of fun to try to find cool stuff that's cheaper.

nice job...and those Minnetonkas are great. If you don't like fringe I don't see why you just couldn't do a teeny bit of DIY and cut it off so they'll look like the A.P.C. moccasins. I mean, it's just leather :)

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I wish I'd seen the Minnetonkas too and I wonder if I could have found them in France... The other day I went to refill the tank of my car, and when I saw a tiny drop of gasoline fall on my right shoe I was so so angry and feeling so bad!!! Luckily when it dried it became invisible, but I know exactly what you mean not feeling comfortable wearing them even though they're very comfy!

I have a pair of the Minnentonkas and they're great. They're very comfortable too so it's wearable all the time. When frequently used, it gets dirty but come on, moccasins look edgier when they're dirty. So I just define edgy as hip, anyway. Haha. As for buying expensive shoes, I guess you'll just have to look for a pair which isn't easily replicated, which makes the price more worth it.

However, I really think you should use your APCs more often so you're actually using the money you spent on them. [:

I love Minnetonka, not only are they one of the more original moccasin companies, they're really good value for money too. I'm wearing my 'furry inside' pair to death.

apc is definitely an aesthetic, as well as a brand, so it is possible to find apc-style items around. but i hope you start to enjoy your perfect shoes. i like that they are fringe-free. i was once searching high and low for a pair of black ankle boots by clarks. sold out everywhere. one day i walked into apc and saw a pair that looked like them, on the shelf. i went over just to laugh at the price of apc's clarks knock-offs and you know what, they were actual clarks. sold at clarks prices. i respected apc for doing that, for acknowledging that someone else already did the perfect simple flat black ankle boot. i bought them. (they ended up being too narrow for me - i can't win.)

fantastic post! very helpful! you should just wear your mocs outside, they are too pretty not to show off. the minnetonkas are cute, but when i tried them on they just didn't work...i think you are right that they would be better without the fringe. or i am just not used to the lack of thunderbird.

I think we've all agonized over some purchase in this way. In the end, I'm always glad to have tried a label, even if it's a purchase I wouldn't make again.

You've gotta get out there wearing those APC's and give people a chance to admire them. Yes, the will eventually be destroyed, but you'll have many happy memories of wearing them. And, thanks to your diligent research, you'll have more choices when it comes to replacing them :)

Don't be affraid to have great shoes! you love them so...keep them.
Yes, you can have stuff that you can wear every day and good stuff for occasion or every day if you want. The question is not good or bad, if you have it use it!

i've been really enjoying my minnetonkas
they are so comfortable and cute
i actually felt guilty about getting those dirty today and was kicking myself for wearing them while gardening.

This post is great!
You should make this a routine....showcasing APC style for cheap! I pour through their catalogs when I get them, then try to find cheaper versions of their looks. I think you did a great job of it, you should make this a regular feature! I would love it.

I'm sorry you feel guilty about buying the apc's and love this post.
(I've been lurking.)
Your shoes are gorgeous and if you splurged on them you should wear them to death - then figure out the Cost Per Wear and you'll feel better knowing that their comfort and quality pays off in the end.

Although I love some of APC's items they are insanely over priced. I have been to the regular store in SOho and the new surplus in my 'hood and I am constantly amazed by their prices.

I am sure you will love the shoes for a long time so it is worth it.

Just wear those shoes outside, girl! You got them to enjoy them, so enjoy them. Any scuffs are a sign of you having fun wearing them. As they say, you can't take it with you. You gotta spend the money now!

I totally agree about the shoes. It is hard to enjoy shoes you can't afford. I find that target shoes don't fit me because I have such a narrow foot, but I find stuff at Nordstrom Rack (I'm from WAshington) all the time in AA, AAA at a fraction of the cost. Right now I live in Copenhagen where prices are skysthelimit and boy it's hurtin. i am making drawings of all the clothes /shoes i am going to make/buy when i return to my sewing machine! thanks for your savvy post. fantastisk.

I feel pretty guilty about most things I buy from APC and then I do it again and again :) The shoes, I never go for though, they seem like a beautiful rip off. . . but their trousers this season. . . can't live without. They've got some nice dresses too.

PS- I heart your blog.

etoilee8 said...

Oh. . .and I am currently contemplating those Minnetonka moccasins. I just might take the plunge. . . though your APC ones are really truly beautiful.

i agree with the other posters - no need to feel guilty, and wear those apc mocs everywhere because you're worth it! :D i just got myself a pair of the minnetonkas today after finding them in a local boutique and falling for them, and so long as your shoes make you feel lovely, who cares how much they cost?
