birks are back, baby!

I have a history of trying to make typically "uncool" shoes cool. I don't shy away from granny shoes, boat shoes, clogs (this fall I'm really going to get some), and now Birkenstocks. I know. People think Birkenstocks are so uncool. You know what's even more uncool? Getting matching Birkenstocks with your friend. But when I was in Montana visiting Elly we both agreed that we liked Birkenstocks. It's okay because I think we're past the point in our lives where we care if other people think our shoes are cool.
Elly sent me this photo of her wearing hers. Little did she know I'd show my blog readers. But I think she looks pretty badass.

I promptly copied her outfit in my own picture.

Alysha really paved the way for us with her acceptance of the Birk.

Erica also rocks her Birkenstock-like sandals. Ok, hers are by Phillip Lim, but whatever. They still look like Birks.

Also, check out Allison in hers. Super cute.

birks are so cool, i love that my austrian husband rocks the birks as house shoes and work shoes (as in he is trained to change out of street shoes and into birks when he gets to work)

yay! it's so great they're back and with so many fun designs -- I'm currently waiting for my pair to come in the mail!

I think I still own my Birks from 1992. They are the clunky traditional ones though. They stay in my closet for sentimental reasons, but they're pretty icky now.

These Birks barely count as Birks -- they are too cute. :)

And to those people who think they're uncool we can say to them at 85, "look at our wonderfully pampered feet!"

I love the style you're wearing. May have to add it to my collection.

Oh YES I am totally addicted to my Birks this summer! I am in a panic as to what I will do when winter rolls around ~ my sister gave me a pair of Birk clogs that she didn't want but that may be going too far in the ugly shoe debate? For now I am rocking the Birk Madrids and Gizeh. Yours look awesome and I love the colour!

There just is not a more comfortable summer shoe out there! I have the Gizeh like Alysha. For me, the key is nice polish on the toenails to prevent the hippy-dippy look.

I just got back from London and EVERYONE seemed to be rocking their Birks!

I love my birks, too! Funny you should post this- I've been looking for a pair for the summer. I don't love sandals (weird about dirty, exposed feet) but I'm going to have to give in because my Vans are *killing* my heels. Alice- I have a pair I wear all winter (indoors) that make my feet sooooo happy. They're charcoal boiled wool clogs. I think they're a little less 'out there' than the leather clogs, although I like yours! They look so well-loved...

With me, at least, it wasn't Birks in general I didn't like, it was that particular style (which you don't picture) that I thought was just not attractive to anyone's foot. These, especially the one's you have are attractive, cute even.

cute birks! I started wearing mine again about a year ago (when my knees finally fell apart). I can't for the life of me think why I ever stopped. They're my second pair and I've had them for ... 12 or 14 years. Seriously, I agree, fffft! to anyone who disses on birks.

Yep I love my Birkies too. I'm loving the style you and Elly got.

Yeah, birks are lovely!
I've been loving them for quite some years now, but lately they're not 'uncool' anymore out here in the Netherlands.
I own two pairs and wear them a lot..

Great pictures, looks very good on you all!!

:) Mila.

Birks are so comfortable! Pish-posh to them being "out of style" whatever that is. I think I've reached that age as well, where I just don't care!

My husband always makes fun of my Birkenstocks but, pfffft! I think they're cool. I have some brown Birk clogs and I've worn out a hole in the sole. I really need to get them fixed . . .

i just got that exact same pair recently! they were the nicest color for that style and the cheapest. it was meant to be :) someone raved about them to me b/c i'm always complaining about lack of arch support so i'm hoping they work out. the breaking in period has not been fun, though.

I had to laugh because last night I watched The Office on DVD and it was the episode where Dwight wears Birkenstocks to Jim's party (and says he keeps an extra pair in the car for special occasions). You and everyone else pictured are succeeding in making them look considerably cooler, though. :)

call me whatever you want. as far as i'm concerned these never went out of style. you just need to be mindful of the style birks you choose. i like the matching ones you bought. so cute you two.

A couple of years ago someone in Italy told me, she could always pick out Germans in a crowd because we are wearing these "hideous shoes" (her words, not mine). Birks have come a long way and you really make them look très chic!
But the "Heidi Klum for Birkenstock" ones are truely ugly...like someone ran amok with a Bedazzler...

Katherine said...

YES! this really makes me happy, as i must admit to second guessing myself after commenting about my birks (which are the same color as and a similar style to elly's) on your post about searching for black sandals. you girls rock.

Just wanted to let you know I've been visiting - felt I should say something.
