the dressing room diaries

I went to the Banana Republic factory store today to return some pants for my husband, and I ended up in the dressing room trying on a skirt. I don't wear skirts. Ever. But that's okay because I really need to wear something other than jeans for once. So I decided to document the experience, Camille-style.

Here's the outfit I came in wearing: Forever21 button down, Old Navy cuffed shorts, and my white Chuck Taylors.

So I found this navy pleated skirt with a cute buttoned sailor flap detail, and it really fits in with what I've been wearing lately. I told Joe the other day that my ideal outfit would make me look like the kind of person who goes sailing alot. Someone who's rich. Preppy. Katharine Hepburn-ish. I tried the skirt on in my size, and it looked a little frumpy. Katharine Hepburn would never look frumpy.

So I grabbed a skirt two sizes too small, and voilĂ !--a high-waisted skirt is born. I think it looks better on me than the other one because it draws attention to my small waist instead of my "good child bearing hips". (Yes, people have said that about my hips.) But I'm afraid that after I actually bear children, I won't want to draw attention to my waist either! So I'll try to enjoy this style while I can.

Whoah, if I stand like this I look like a total nerd!

Hmmmm, I don't know about this....

Nah, it's fierce.

hilarious!

I have had that similar dressing room experiences (I also have good baby bearing hips) but with skirts I've always chickened out of the high-waisted look...but now I think it's a good idea! Also, it's amazing how the way we stand can change a look from totally dorky to totally fierce.

I had to chuckle at your comment about "childbearing hips", Jenny! :D 'Cause that's what people characterize mine as too. rofl. I never know if that's a compliment, or insult... ;)

Love that skirt--and it totally rocks that preppy, East Coast-old school look! You can really pull it off well.

You've inspired me. Next time I go into a dressing room to try on something cool, I'm totally gonna document it. ;)

You are funny.

I definitely like the smaller version better -- good thinking! I haven't been inside the BR outlet yet -- I always have antsy children with me.

Oh man, people have totally said the same about my hips. I just got into high waisted skirts too-- searching for a good pencil skirt.
ps...I really enjoy your blog and have nominated you for a little award on my blog. Take a look if you like:)

High waisted skirts do serve for hip flattery. I love the combination of chucks and skirts/dresses. All my friends disagree but I think your picture prove the cuteness that can ensue from the pairing.

I hear you. All of it. Less jeans wearing, more Katherine Hepburn, nervousness about a "child-born" waist. I feel like I'm just now figuring out the styles I want to wear, and my body could completely change in the next few years! And golly, to be able to do one's hair like they did back then...cute skirt, and cute hair, and top.
