saving the best for last

photos by Emily Moore

Ok
, so basically I've been saving this one up and it's been driving me crazy. Because it's my favorite. It's not quite exactly the last item, but I couldn't wait any longer. The thing about this collection that's so exciting to me is something that I've been keeping a secret. And my big secret is that Elly Fales is now working with me!!! The reason that I'm so thrilled is that she's my best friend. And she's super talented. We work well together because we really share a design sensibility and are often thinking the same thoughts anyways. We've actually been collaborating through this whole design process, constantly guiding each other and giving opinions. When we discuss our ideas together it seems that we often come up with something completely new that we hadn't thought of before. I have to say that it's so much easier (and more fun) than going it alone. In the next few weeks I definitely plan to give you a little more insight into our design processes.

So that brings me to talk about this beautiful dress, the Orchard House dress by Elly Fales for Wiksten. (If you can guess where that name comes from I'll give you 10 points.) It's striking. It's red. It's also made from the softest corduroy I've ever touched. The goal for the design was a sailor-ish dress that wasn't costumey or tired. I think Elly accomplished that goal with this dress and did it quite well. She made the pattern herself from scratch. And she will be sewing each dress by hand. I graded the patterns.

Against my better judgment (and without permission from Elly), here are some pictures of both Elly and I trying on the model's sample. Wow, I'm pretty sure we were both exhausted from working and most certainly makeup-less, which is why we're favoring the side-glance pose. The only reason I'm even looking forward to fall and winter is that I know I'm going to be wearing this dress. A lot. And by the way, this is my mom's favorite dress from the collection. (She told me that before she found out it wasn't my design!) : )

THIS IS GORGEOUS! I cannot wait, is it too much to ask what time the collection will go on sale?

The new collection is so great! And those photos display all the pieces so wonderfully. I feel like I'm looking at the Stewart+Brown or Anthro catalog! I love this red Ellymade sailor dress (I've been going sailing lately and am OBSESSED with all things nautical plus red is my favorite color!) but I have to say I think the Lena dress is my favorite piece. Anyway, best of luck and much congratulations to you this season! xoxo!

this is an amazing beautiful dress, kudos to elly and you both- i want one desperately now and i don't normally so much red, that whole redheads wearing red thing (which i don't always follow anyway- i mean, red wool hooded coats are too much to resist, it reminds me of snow). amazing designs, and the hem stalle top i am crazy about.

I feel a little lame for asking... but can you please tell me about those clogs?

I believe 'Orchard House' is from Little Women. It's kind of funny because I was watching Little Women while reading this and heard the name. Quite a coincidence. I love these designs. Beautiful work!

I love the t-straps Elly is wearing! Do you know who makes them?

I couldn't agree with you more about collaboration. I am a graphic designer and I just graduated. I've had a lot of freelance work, but tackling everything alone has been very tough on me. I'm glad you found a partner.
