I love how cozy winter nights can be. I spent some time last night messing around with my new camera and shot these on manual. I'm psyched that the lens is fast enough to capture images really well even in the dark. This is exactly what the lighting actually looked like at the time. I've never had a camera that could do that before.

exciting! i'm glad you are becoming more and more involved with photography - a new camera can do that ;)
Fixed lenses are awesome. I'm very much an amateur, but when I got my first 50mm lens, every shot was gold. These photos look lovely!
Jenny, do you have a "bad" kitty, too? One who owns the top of the dining room table, especially when a nice tablecloth has been put on it? ;) Fab photos, btw. Here's hoping that you end up being my neighbor in Chapel Hill!
BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS.
your house seems really sweet. :)
Welcome back Jenny! We've missed you but understand how life can get too busy for blogging :)
And congratulations on your wonderful new camera! You took lovely photos with your old camera, so this should be great fun for you (and for us!). I miss using my old SLR film camera, but it's so difficult logistically to work with film nowadays. What kind of camera did you end up getting?
Jenny, I hope you don't mind that I have added your terrific blog to my list of favorites on my new blog, *gemmifer*. I'd love it if you'd stop by some time to give it a look:

Thanks!
Oh that must be so very nice! I can't wait til I can afford a camera that will do that. ahhh.
I've been longing for a nikon, your pictures are so lovely that it's convinced me I must purchase one soon:)
beautiful photos, jenny. am swamped with dailycandy but taking a quick break to read a select few blogs, of course had to drop by here. glad i did-- the photos made me feel nice and calm. :)
such beautiful and warm photos, really capture the atmosphere! :-)
What kind of lens do you use with your Nikon D80? I'm planning to buy a D80 but can't decide on a lens... Grrr...
no matter the light, the light my camera decides to produce is of it's own making. i can look outside and be bowled over by the colors of the sky, but my camera is never phased. i think it has really, really bad eyesight. i'm definitely in need of a new one, but tentative to take the plunge...
Very cool - I'm so jealous of your new camera!
these are very pretty. my favorite is the colored lights and well...i can't resist that cuddly cat either. i'm sure there will be much more beauty to come through your new camera. thanks for sharing.
So glad you're enjoying your camera so much! I recently bought a Nikon DSLR myself! Very thrilled as well : ) So much better than a point and shoot! Anyway, wanna ask which colour settings/ white balance settings did you set for your shots? They have this soft yellow, blue-ish feel which I'm really into!
THANKS! : D
I too have been super excited to be playing with a new camera. A whole new world opens up and you start to see differently. I feel like I want to be a photographer again! :)
Fun to find another creative explorer. Looking forward to your experimentations as you learn your camera's settings.
Have fun!

You've convinced me, too! I still use an old point and shoot!!
great photos! love the winter sunsets.
isn't it great?
Lovely photos! I need a camera that can take good low-light photos badly. Especially with the days being so short in the winter.
i, too, am curious what lens you're using. i've got a d60 myself and am loving your new photos!
50 mm f 1.4
thx! i've been looking at lenses all day, and that's the best one i've found.
lovely and sweet pictures I really like
