bff cardigan

I just got back from a last minute trip to Montana to see my best friend.  For the first time ever we started a knitting project together.  We're both making a cardigan but sort of winging the pattern, trying to do something with a custom fit.  It's so cool to see how we both come at the same thing from totally different angles.  I've been kind of into black and white marled sweaters lately (top photo: me trying on cardigan at Madewell, bottom photo: cardigan from J.Crew), so I bought this yarn at Purl Soho in "Penguin".  I'm going for something completely cuddly, soft, and cozy that I can wear over t-shirts.  I already know that I'll never get rid of this cardigan (even if it ends up less than perfect) because it holds such special memories for me.

By the way, when I posted about selling my hand-knitted sweaters on eBay, my mom made her first blog comment ever!  She wanted to buy the sweaters herself to keep them in the family.  How sweet is that?  Unfortunately I had already sold them.

Moms! I kill every plant my Mom has ever given me but whenever I come and visit, on the drive back, there's always a potted plant next to my suitcases.

You should look at Barbara Walker's Knitting From the Top Down, I knit a cardigan similar to this style, plus you can customize the fit as you go, it's a great way to knit a sweater, and there's alot less finishing to do.

That is SO CUTE about your mom. Aw, mom! You'll just have to keep on making them.

That's so cute about your mom! Also, I love that the yarn is called "penguin"- I would buy it just for that!

I love both of those cardigans, I bet yours will look just as good, if not better :)

I've been obsessed with knitting a marled sweater, too after seeing them everywhere this season...but with 1 strand of white + one of black held together. I can't wait to see your finished result.

I love the idea of working together on a handmade project with a friend, especially if you are trying a pattern for the first time. My aunt and I are actually going to attempt our first handknit hats together, and I am looking forward to having someone to talk to if I get hung up on an instruction. Even better that you are making something custom fit! I am always so in awe of how Elly can take a picture of a handknit piece as inspiration, and then design a sweater or scarf wholly her own. It is a real gift. Your friendship with Elly is a beautiful thing to read about.

The marled sweater look is definitely in the fashion atmosphere right now--Old Navy has a fairly affordable version for anyone who is interested: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=51747&vid=1&pid=696859&scid=696859002

P.S. What your mom did reminds me so much of my own mom. My mom would have exactly the same reaction if I tried to sell something I had made. I remember the first time I successfully knit a mitten, my mom said she felt [almost] as proud as she did when I graduated from law school. ;-) It's just the sweetest how proud your mom is of you; you are really lucky that she supports your passion.
