american apparel nail lacquer review

I meant to post this yesterday, but some idiot (me) spilled water all over my keyboard and mouse. One trip to the Apple store later, I'm good to go.

When I originally went to American Apparel to buy their nail lacquer, the bottles had been recalled.  I waited until they restocked to go back.  I bought four bottles: Passport Blue (navy), Office (mint green), Mouse (gray/taupe), and Pinto (brick red).  The Passport Blue and Office were gifts for a friend, so I only tried on Mouse and Pinto.  I might go back and get the Passport Blue and Office for myself too though, along with a few other colors.  Since I've only bought something like four bottles of nail polish since high school, I can totally justify the cost!

First of all, I'll say that I love the colors.  You can view all of them here.  However, I had a really hard time applying this stuff to my nails without making it look like a drunk hobo did it for me!  I'll be the first to admit that I'm not great at painting my nails, but I'd say this particular polish made it much harder than normal.  It's very thick and pretty much dries right away, so you have to get it right immediately.  You can't push it around on your nail until it looks good.  That said, I've read reviews online that say it's good quality stuff.  I won't dispute that, but I just think it's hard to use.  I don't mind taking it to a manicurist though.  Cheap manicures are one great perk of living in New York.

See photos of nails painted with most of the colors here and here.

Haha. My nails always look like a drunk hobo painted them. That's why I do it like twice a year.

I seriously need to take a trip back and get more colors, b/c it is legit some quality stuff...haha what great syntax I employ...but I agree, it dries rather fast, which is a pain, b/c my "painting" skills are at abt a 2 on a scale of 1-10...and I'm so jealous you got the office color! that was THE ONE I wanted, and they didn't have it when I first went...need to go back, need to go back...

hola jenny-- does it dry completely pretty quickly or just the top dries fast? thanks for the review!

I love those colours! I wonder if American Apparel here sells them.

Is it that warm over there already, or are those sandals just wishful thinking?

Great colours! I can't get enough of warm grey polish right now. I have "Grey ll" from Urban Outfitters which is exactly like "You Don't Know Jacques" from OPI; yours looks lighter, though, which, to an addict, means justification to buy.

You seem to know pretty talented drunken hobos.

I am wearing Office. I did my normal hardener/2 layers polish/fast dry top layer routine. It went on a little unevenly, chipped pretty quickly, and clashes with every other days's outfit, but I like the unusual color a lot. I am pretty fond of it.

I think your nails look fantastic, not drunken hobo painted. Your fingernails look very nice, short and neat, the way I like mine...oh wait, mine don't look like that. :/

thanks for the succinct review, jenny! i thought it went on unevenly too. i also used a base layer and top coat. mine haven't chipped yet, but it's only day two.

my nails ended up looking really nice, but only after over AN HOUR working at it! some of them were embarrassingly bad at first, thus the drunk hobo comment. i'm a perfectionist though, so i redid and redid and worked at it hard. i don't want to have to work hard when painting my nails. it should be fun!

Fun colors! I wish I wasn't such a freak about polish on my fingernails though. I can't seem to not pick it off...

Yesterday, I changed to the "Passport Blue." It's really dark, and looks almost black on me. I like it, too, but slightly less than "Office." It was harder to make the dark blue look neat and tidy on my nails. It's more fun to photograph my hands holding snacks with this polish, though.

I want approx. 8 of the other colors, though I wish they had a nice, blue-based red in the bunch. ;)

when nail polish is really thick i usually put a little bit of nail polish remover in and shake it up for a while. it works really well.

Ahh thank you for this review. I was skeptical of those others. This is the very complaint I have about Essie nail polish-- it dries fast, but it's goopy and the brush is small, so it tends to go on really unevenly. OPI, on the other hand, goes on like a dream... I just wish they didn't feel the need to put shimmer in every bottle of polish they make. Then they'd be perfect.

Good colors though. Your drunk hobo manicurist must be one of those whose hand gets steadier as he drinks... kidding, kidding. Sorry if that last comment just made me the Erin Wasson of the blog-world.
