a little spring inspiration for your day

top to bottom: "0184", "each new day" (lieke roomijs' whole photostream is gorgeous), an abandoned building at floyd bennett field, and jacob riis park

So, I didn't have my photo shoot yet.  It turns out that the photographer I'm working with had to go to Spain at the last minute for another shoot.  (What a life, huh?)  Although I did get to meet with him and the model last night when his flight got in.  We did a fitting and discussed ideas for the shoot, and now we're aiming to do it next weekend.  It's supposed to rain, but I really need the weather to be nice!  Dominic wants to shoot at the beach maybe, so last night I researched some New York beaches and came up with these photos for inspiration.  I'm all for going to the beach and breaking into abandoned buildings.

I'm so frustrated that I haven't been able to blog more lately.  For the last week my internet connection has only been working about 15% of the time.

jenny i would totally recommend fort tilden, a nice quiet beach out on the rockaways. I have some photos on my blog here- http://heyheyhoney.blogspot.com/2010/04/fort-tilden-tiny-new-york-city-viewed.html
with some of the old abandoned forts. it's really gorgeous and quiet out there on a nice day!

I hear ya. I had to wipe off my entire computer, start over. But my connection is super fast now.

Great photos though and looking forward to seeing YOUR shoot.

The life, indeed! I love the abandoned building shot. I also think it's awesome that the National recommended Jacob Riis Park. I've had Boxer on repeat while I've been studying for finals/writing papers. Better with every listen!

It's an obvious choice, but I think Coney Island could make for a really interesting Wiksten shoot. There is so much history there and I can imagine a cool contrast between the seediness of the boardwalk and freak shows, with the subtle femininity and strength of your clothes. I am imagining something like a screen cap from Carnivale or Geek Love, very Depression-era-y and mysterious and beautiful. I like to go there once a summer just to ride the Cyclone and take it all in--so much visual stimulation! Also, Governor's Island has great abandoned forts and officer's homes, many of which have a total gothic feel, and you could get some good shots on the Governor's Island beach with the NYC skyline in the background.

Good luck with the computer issues--what a hassle--and I really can't wait to see the photos from your shoot! I know you'll choose a perfect location.

Ack, I hate how taking pictures depends on the weather so much! I'll be crossing my fingers for you for good weather this weekend! I think the beach is a great idea, and I can't wait to see what you've been working on:)

oh emilie, your photos are amazing! thank you.

kristien, that's so weird that i didn't even notice that the national recommended that place! i've been listening to the song ada over and over again for the past two weeks. How did I not notice that? i've still never even been to governor's island or coney island. i want to though. i don't really have computer problems, i have time warner cable problems is what i have.

Fort tilden would be perfect, but I'm not sure how you would get everything there. My understanding is that they only give out a few parking permits to fishermen otherwise you'd have to walk everything over from Riis (long walk). I'm sure Stef and I would be willing to bike your collection out there for you though. -rachael

Oh, Ada is great! My current favorites on the album are Mistaken for Strangers, Green Gloves, and Racing Like a Pro. Did you know they are playing a show in Prospect Park this summer? I found out about this only recently and have been debating whether to pay the rip off prices for the still available tickets on Stub Hub or eBay.

I definitely recommend you check out both Governor's Island and Coney Island. The first time I visited Coney Island, I felt a little sad the whole time I was there, because I was thinking about what it once was, and was having trouble reconciling that with the present, which seemed pretty depressing. But the next time, I visited with my brother, and we just relaxed into the scene and had an awesome day. We went to the freak show, got hot dogs at Nathan's, walked the boardwalk, and rode the Cyclone. The Cyclone is seriously the scariest, most thrilling roller coaster ever. At one point you feel like you are going to fly out into the ocean! If you ever want to read a good book about Coney Island, I recommend Dreamland, by Kevin Baker. It's historical fiction, but you learn a lot, and it is a great story.

Good luck with the Time Warner cable problems! I am bummed to hear you are getting spotty service with them as E.J. and I were considering switching because RCN has been giving us a lot of trouble. Ugh...

Oh Crap! We just got Time Warner today! Haha...but our internet is actually working better now that we switched.

Well, I'm psyched for your shoot. The results are gonna be beautiful, I have no doubt!

rachael, you have a good point! i didn't even think about that. hmmmm, what to do...

kristien, i've listened to dreamland on audiobook. i got it from the library a while back. i've seen so many coney island photo shoots already though.

thanks, jennifer! some people like time warner. i don't know why it doesn't really work for us.

I would recommend Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island - particularly Battery Weed:

There is also access to a beach overlooking Brooklyn under the Verrazano right at Fort W. Also nearby, Gateway National Park at Great Kills is one of the most beautiful beaches in NYC - with an adjacent marina.
