mom's visit

mom's visit

My mom came to visit over the weekend, and I prepared the guest room for her just in time.  It used to be my office, and there's just enough room for a twin mattress on the floor.  Talk about luxury.  Once I got the room put together I couldn't decide if the all the crazy colors and patterns made it look insane or charming (something I also wonder about my personality at times).  My mom claims charming, but then again she herself is the one who raised me to throw a bunch of colors and patterns together and call it a day.  Sophia seemed to really like it, as she spent the entire weekend curled up at the foot of the bed.

When my mom arrived we exchanged presents--she gave me a copy of the November Martha Stewart issue that I'm in (I hadn't even seen it yet!), and I gave her a copy of Brooklyn Diary and a pair of socks I made.

We did a lot of fun things during our time together.  Here's what:

1. Made eggplant stew.  Yum.
2. Went to see a stupid romantic comedy.  I never get to do that.
3. Bought books at The Strand.
4. Visited my studio at Dobbin Mews.
5. Saw a quilt exhibit and a Henry Darger exhibit at the Folk Art Museum.
6. Walked around Central Park, ate at the boat house, and went to the zoo.
7. Watched three old movies that my mom got at the library.
8. Went to Purl for yarn and fabric and New York Central Art Supply for beautiful paper.
9. Worked my CSA volunteer shift together.
10. Went to dinner at Vinegar Hill House with Joe.
11. Ate pot pie and people-watched at the Blue Stove.

Phew.  Nice and busy weekend.  I miss her.

Mom weekends are the best!

I love the guest bedroom - I think it looks great! I have the same wool blanket as the blue one you have except it is yellow ochre. Don't you love it?

The different colours and patterns are definitely charming! It's like the whole room is one big quilt.

I just got back to NY from a wonderful long weekend visiting with my lovely sister out in SF, and what do I see in my new November MSL magazine but Jenny Gordy! How exciting; I can't wait to read the article... I'm sure it will make my dreams of having a successful little business grow even bigger!

Oh man, I was just reading this month's Martha Stewart and was surprised to see you in there. It's not everyday that I recognize the bloggers featured in Living.

Congrats!

This sounds like a wonderful week-end! I really like a mix of colourful patterns and I'm sure your guest room was perfectly sweet and cosy. Short-lived bed installations are the best! Hope that sentence makes sense :)

Oh, Jenny, this sounds like the best weekend! There is no replacement for your mom, and she must be extraordinarily proud of you. My mom and I already booked a weekend for her to visit when I am done with finals, and I really can't wait. Your guest room looks adorable--I love the bedspread...it reminds me of the scarves from your 2008 fall collection. The bunny print is precious and seeing the Corwin print makes me kick myself for not having picked it up at last fall's studio sale.

I am interested to hear what you thought of the Darger exhibit. Coincidentally enough, my mom and I also went to a different Darger exhibit at the American Folk Art Museum a couple of years ago--it was Darger and the artists he inspired. I had no context for the exhibit, because at the time I had never heard of Henry Darger, so found the Vivian Girls imagery extremely disturbing. When I got home, I read more about him and the different critical views of his art, including the Vivian Girls as feminist icons. Art is all in the eye of the beholder, but his art is particularly thought provoking.
