fall 2010 mociun sale

Fall 2010 is 50% off at Mociun!  I have four things from the collection, and they've been well worn and loved over the fall and winter months.

Top row: Waterline dress in pink squares print.  I'm not a big pink person, but this pale color was just too lovely to pass up.

Middle Row: Fractures blouse in mountain print.  It's sold out in that print, but the black and white squares print is my second favorite.  The sheer chiffon is pretty gorgeous over a tank top or dress.  To the right, the Waterline dress in mountain print.  The colors are amazing.  I don't own it, but that's a picture of me trying it on.

Bottom Row:  one of my favorite t-shirts, the Systematic Mountain tee in cream.  To the right, the Topography dress in black and white.  I tried it on, and I want it so bad!

Last but not least, I have the Ledge leggings (not pictured).  It's too cold to wear them right now, but I wore them a ton in the fall and will in the spring too.

The Holiday Lilly sweater from Steven Alan (on sale!) reminds me of the Kaari sweater I just made, sans pockets.  Same color, similar neckline.  They have it in a beautiful light heathered grey too.  All of the winter stuff is on sale

I love the new spring collection to death and am saving up for some of the pieces.  Looks like the spring lookbook isn't up anymore, but a few things are already for sale.

winter shop update

tova top

I'm having a shop update next week with Liberty print cut out sleeve tops, Tova shirts and dresses, and sewing patterns.  Something to chase away the winter blues hopefully.  The Tova shirt pictured above is a sample that I'm keeping.  I wasn't happy with it because, if you'll notice from the side view, the plaid lines don't match up.  I messed it up, which is what happens when you talk to studio mates instead of concentrating (my fault, not theirs--I'm the chatterbox of the group).  Anyways the ones I sell will all be perfectly matched up, have no fear.  Everything in the shop is already made and will ship out immediately, good news for those of you who've had to wait eons on pre-orders.  More info to come next week!

kaari sweater 2.0

kaari sweater, second try

Two years ago I knit my first Kaari sweater.  I loved the pattern, but the size I made was too big.  A year ago I started making a second version of the sweater using my own measurements instead of the ones in the pattern.  A couple of weeks ago I decided to pick up the project again and finish it.  I wore it on Tuesday, and it fit perfectly!  This is the first sweater I've made that actually fits me.  I felt cozy and warm all day.  I know I sound like a broken record, but I LOVE the Frog Tree yarn that I used.  It's so soft.

baby sweater

tiny sweater for eli

Remember how I was going to make a sweater for Lena's baby?  I finished it in time for the birth, and I've already seen Eli wearing it.  He was adorable!  I used the "Chunky Knit Cardigan" pattern in Erika Knight's Simple Knits for Cherished Babies and this snuggly yarn (one of my favorites that i use often).  It's a cute enough sweater, but I'm not in love with the pattern.  I think the shape of the arms is a little weird, and the body might be a little short.

I love the sweater Lena ended up making!  Next time I'll try that pattern instead.

After a blog reader told me about the sale going on at Brooklyn General, I spent the afternoon yarn shopping there on Saturday.  Everything in the store was 25% off!  This is absurd, but I actually hurt my wrist carrying around too much yarn in one hand.  I'm a delicate flower, ha!  Anyways, I came home with some beautiful blue Madeline Tosh sock yarn (have been wanting some forever) in the exact color I had in my mind for a new pair of socks (Bloomsbury).  Also, I got some Lana Grossa Royal Tweed in light beige for a hat for my friend who requested a neutral color.  And last but not least, more Koigu for socks!  (Colorway p342.)  Brooklyn General is having a web sale too, and the code is Jan2011.

My secret santa (Ellie, Joe's sister) got me the best present ever for Christmas--a subscription to Cook's Illustrated.  I've been wanting one for the past year, and Joe didn't even tell her.  Somehow she just knew.  (Maybe because last year I spent the entire Christmas day wrapped up in her copy.)  Last week my first issue arrived in the mail, and I immediately devoured it, reading the entire thing from cover to cover.  I love it.  The magazine really appeals to the perfectionist in me.  My left brain takes over when I do most things, especially cook, and Cook's Illustrated takes that same approach.  The recipes are created in a scientific manner, variations being judged by taste testers to determine the winning combination of ingredients and methods.  My favorite part is the explanation of why one thing works better than another.  And, dang, the recipes are delicious.  Pictured above are the molasses spice cookies I made from this recipe.  Yum.  Seriously, best present ever.

I made my brother-in-law's wife a cozy pair of socks for Christmas this year.  The cashmere + merino yarn was delightful to knit, and I love the color.  Charcoal is neutral enough to go with anything, but the subtle variations in tone make it special.  I've already seen Julie wearing them, so I'm happy.  She's a runner (just ran the New York City marathon, woohoo!), and I like to think of them as a special treat for her tired feet.  Tomorrow I'll show you what I got from my secret santa--it's pretty awesome.

learning sock knitting

socks

Every now and then I get e-mails and comments asking for tips on making socks.  Most of them are questions about what pattern I use and what type of yarn I buy and where.  I hope to answer those questions here.

Sock knitting isn't for everyone.  I never knew I would be so into knitting socks.  Why would I be?  Socks are knit on four needles, the stitches are tiny, and a pair of socks can take up to 20 hours to make.  It's not logical, but I LOVE doing it.  I caught the bug, and now socks are by far my favorite thing to knit.  It's second-nature mindless knitting to me at this point, and I find that to be a comforting pastime.

My foray into using double pointed needles started with making these adorable baby moccasins.  Getting over the awkwardness of using four needles (double pointed needles or dpn's) was so hard at first, but once I got the hang of it I was in love.

After that project I decided to attempt adult-sized socks.  I first learned using this excellent pattern pamphlet bought at a Jo-Ann craft store.  Included in the booklet are patterns for socks in fingering, worsted, and chunky weight gauges, not to mention a slipper pattern and a fair isle sock pattern.  The instructions are so clear and there are color photos for every step of the process.  I've since developed my own pattern with my own measurements, tricks, and toe construction (NOT grafted), but the basis of all my sock knowledge came from the Paton's book.

I might eventually share my own pattern, but for now it's mainly in my head with only random, haphazard notes jotted in my knitting notebook.  I should say that the first sock I ever knit was HUGE!  My gauge was wrong, and I found the foot length measurement in the Paton's patterns to be a bit off.  Now I always test my gauge first, and after knitting a ton of socks I've made my own modifications so that I have a pattern that fits the way I like.

Meanwhile, there are tons of great free basic sock patterns on Ravelry.  You can search by gauge and everything.  Once you get the hang of it, you'll surely be able to develop your own pattern for your particular foot too.  Most plain sock patterns are more or less the same, but the important thing is practicing and testing them out until you have what you want.  In the beginning I made socks that didn't fit, and I made a ton of mistakes.  It's essential to develop the patience to go back and fix things or to start over and try again.  And again.  If you enjoy the process of knitting, it's not that big of a deal.  It just takes time.

In all things I do I'm obsessive, and knitting is no exception.  In fact knitting might be the worst.  I obsessively listen to Kelly Petkun's Knit Picks podcasts (thanks to Lissa), and I've learned a thing or two about socks from her.  I knit all my socks one at a time from the cuff down on dpn's, but a lot of people do two at a time on two circs.  Some do toe up.  Some people use the magic loop method.  I don't do those things even though they might be easier.  I DETEST using circular needles.  I LOVE using dpn's, although it's probably a little slower.  Every knitter is different, and you just have to find your own way.

As far as yarn goes, I like to stick with merino for socks.  It's non-itchy and very cuddly.  Soft yarns do tend to pill, but you can always use a lint shaver for that.  I don't like to use synthetic blends.  They don't feel good, and they look cheap.  (No offense to anyone, it's just my personal taste.)  Natural fiber all the way.  If you're going to spend twenty hours with a yarn, why not use a nice one?

I spend a LOT of time sourcing yarn.  I mean hours upon hours upon hours.  That's why I don't usually give away my yarn choices.  However, I will say that I go shopping a lot in person.  That's always the best.  Purl is one of my favorite shops, but I also shop at several Brooklyn stores like The Yarn Tree and Brooklyn General.  Sometimes I search Ravlery for hours looking for something specific if I can't find it in a shop, and then I end up buying online.

See what happens when you get me started talking about knitting?  Phew, long-winded and bo-ring.  I could talk about knitting all day every day.  But my hope is that you'll find this post helpful and encouraging.  Now go knit socks!  And remember, if you get stuck you can always find an online video to help you.

After making many pairs of socks for the shop and for loved ones, I finally made some just for me.  I've already worn them twice, and I've gotta say handmade socks really are the best.  So comfy and warm.  Since I'd gotten sick of knitting with the usual neutral colors I favor, I decided to make mine in crazy colors.  Totally unlike me, but totally fun.  I bought the yarn at Purl, where perusing the wild, beautiful color combinations of Koigu has become a habit for me.

Speaking of handmade socks, have you seen these?  Freaking awesome!

What would Diane do?  (That's my mom.)  Diane would make a lasagna for a friend that just had a baby, so that's what I did.  It's the Midwestern way.  Used this delicious recipe, and Sarkilahti supplied the salad and her favorite soup.  What a precious little baby boy, with a precious family and home to boot.  Congrats, Lena!

Before Lissa left she took a quilting class at Brooklyn General, and her work was so inspiring.  In honor of Lissa, I thought I'd share these quilts my mom and I saw at the folk art museum back in October.  I love the tiny doll quilts!

This is what I wore to the New Year's Eve sparkle party on Friday, undeniably more glamorous than my attire three years ago on the same night.  (Although Sarkilahti has a photo of me this year in the exact same pose.  I guess it's just what I do).  Used this tutorial for my updo.
