before and after

before and after
haircut 2

I was in New York a little over a week ago, and I finally got a haircut.  The last time I got my hair cut was ONE YEAR AGO, when I was in NY for Capsule.  Crazy.  I grew my hair out for a long time, but at some point I realized that I love the idea of long hair but I hate actually having long hair.  It's too much work.  It got to the point where it was about to just turn into dread locks, so I chopped it.  Plus I've had that whole ombre blonde hair thing for 2 or 3 years, and I just needed to do something new and get rid of the damaged ends.  The picture on the right was taken right after the cut, so it's blow dried straight and sleek, but I never wear it that way normally.  Now that I've washed it and it's wavy again (bottom photo), I LOVE it.  I always forget that shoulder length is totally "me".  Do you know what I mean?  What style makes you feel the most like yourself?  I realize this is a totally boring post, but I seriously haven't cut my hair in ONE YEAR.  So it's pretty monumental to me.  Well, hairwise anyways.  What's that joke from Arrested Development about how you should buy expensive hair conditioner because you can't put a price on self-esteem?  Haha.

Well you & your hair look freaking gorgeous either way!

It really does look great. Long hair is a *huge* pain! I also recently cut my hair after a year. The damaged ends and overall rattiness made me look like a seahag! I envy those who are able to keep their long hair looking healthy and neat.

That jump suit is so great! Where did you find it and how do I get one? :)

I feel like I go through that same thought pattern every single year, but love it best when it's around shoulder length because I am SO not a hair person.

Your cut looks great! What a lady :)

I have curly hair and feel like my hair pretty much looks the same all the time, so in hopes of something a little different, but not too different, I went in with a photo from Sartorialist of somebody with a similar jawline and similar hair, but about chin length instead of shoulder length. Well, at age 40 I now have my first truly bad haircut. I look like Kate Gosselin circa porcupine hair. It's tragic. I cried for weeks, then went in to just get it all chopped to start over. Haha, it looked even worse! Five months later it was scary again and also kind of a mullet, so I went in for a little maintenance. Please let this be the final act in this tragedy! Because now I have a cross between a bowl cut and a mullet. I would cry if I had any tears left.

Oh, it really does suit you like that! I like mine short, around chin length, but even a basic haircut is so expensive. So I leave it for ages in between cuts and just trim my fringe (bangs) myself. [I have a feeling this is not what proper grown-ups do.] I've just decided I can only afford to have it cut once more this year, and as I want it to look neat for various parties in December, I'm going to have to leave it long and annoying for another 8 weeks or so...

Looks good! I totally like your natural wavy better than the blow-dried straight. I'm going on a year with no haircut myself...it'll be fun to lop it all over, but I'm not done with the long long hair yet.

Yay a new post!

I know exactly what you mean about hair feeling 'you'. A great shoulder-length cut always looks so fresh and pretty, and it's the best of both worlds - you can tie it up into a cute little ponytail, or leave it long and wavy. :)

Looks great. Post more often!

I can't agree more about loving the idea of having long hair but hating it when I have it. I grew my hair out last year to the longest it has ever been EVER (maybe just short that what your was?) but I ended up tying it up always. I live in a suer windy city, it's just not practical!! So I cut it into a nice short bob, it's sitting around the bottom of my checks and I feel much more me. As you say, it's so weird to forget what haircuts make you feel 'you'. Hurrah for the chop!

i know what you mean about liking long hair in theory but not in practice. it's been 10 months for me, and i scheduled a cut for saturday. it will probably be a trim because i find braids and ponytails are easier to deal with, but i think a chin-length messy bob suits my face and build the best.

You're adorable. The shoulder length hairstyle suits you very well.

The length looks great on you! I will probably take some length off in the next few months too :)

I agree shoulder length is certainly "you", it really suits you.
P.S love your jumpsuit, its gorgeous :-)

Yay, you did it! Looks so great, Jenny.

I'm the opposite, it's shorter hair that I find a total pain. I feel I have a lot more options with long hair: loose, braids, pony, bun, etc... but sometimes I worry that it's starting to look a little silly at my age (40s) to have loooong hair. I don't know...

Anywhoo, your hair is gorgeous, no matter how you wear it. But you certainly rock your shoulder length do! You look so fresh-faced and pretty!

Hope you tell us more about your NYC trip (I'm always looking for suggestions of things to do when I'm there).

It looks great! You have good texture for air drying. I feel more like me with long hair, but I cut it all off about three years ago. I immediately started growing it back out, haha. In between I had a messy bob with bangs, and I never got so many compliments. Not even the ego stroking could get me to stop growing it!

LOVE your haircut, Jenny! You look great with long hair and short hair. But I know what you mean. I'm still trying to find the length of hair I like. Right now I'm just growing it until I get tired of it I guess. That's why I got bangs. I HAD to cut something, right? ;) But it is fun to have fairly long hair again. I remember bragging when I was eleven how I had the longest hair of all the girls in my grade. lol. It was pretty ratty, though... ;)

cute! i've been hemming and hawing about chopping all mine off too (it's reached waist level, yikes!), except the style i want changes from week to week. alexa chung one week, david bowie another week, something completely different yet another week...it'll be some time, ha!

Gorgeous before and after!

Right now there is a big knotty mass lurking beneath the brushed outer layer of my hair.

Awww, you’re so beautiful either way, I love the light that shines through your face on the first pic. I agree 100%, I do love very long hair but it’s too much high maintenance for myself

this made me smile because i too just got a haircut after a year of ignoring it.
love how your cut turned out!

Jenny, your hair looks great like that, I see what you mean when you say "it's you". My hair is getting long and having it that way is "me", too, when i'ts shorter I have the feeling it has been chopped against my will, like it has been taken away from me, weird :)

I hope you're having a lovely time where you are, have a bright day!

Lynn said...

I loooove it! You look about 5 years younger with your hair that length! I'm loathe to admit it but I usually do have a better day when my hair looks good. I'm not sure what that says about me, but there it is! Ha!

Gorgeous in all photos, as always. I know exactly what you mean about long hair. I actually have a necklace that finishes exactly where I found my hair length looks best, so often use that for reference. I, too, prefer the wavy/more natural style versus the hairdressers obligatory straight hair dry. I feel a bit stiff and awkward if my hair is too done. I prefer soft waves and thick glossy hair. Maybe it's the time I spent idolising the late 80s models - Cindy etc!

You're such a gorgeous gal you look great both ways. I wore my hair super Mia Farrow short for over 10 years and now I'm in my early 40's went a little longer trying to hide a few "crinkles", think shorter hair is me though, the smartness makes up for my casualness everywhere else!

Totally get that shoulder length hair :) Cut my hair about a week ago and it feels amazing.
That hairstyle is really great on you!

Great cut! I feel 100% the same was as you do about longer hair. Actually, my "me" length is about the same as yours! Still long enough to do stuff with, but not so long that it's annoying. I love the idea of doing stuff with my hair, but in truth I'm not too inclined to do much more than a low bun.

It looks great, and you're so brave to get so much cut off! I think I would struggle with that decision if I had hair as long as yours was. I have been trying to grow my hair for so long, but it's so fine I have to go for the chop. I'm thinking of getting it cut into a bob soon though.

Congrats on your new do!
